Institutional research

I think that the institution that would most likely distribute my media text is 20th century fox as they distribute lots of thrillers such as “silence of the lambs” which is a horror/ thriller but is very famous film which involves the cat and mouse chase story of a detective and a serial killer. And phone booth which is also a very well known thriller. I think that 20th century fox would be interested in distributing my film as it has done lots of well known thrillers which are fairly similar to my film.

I think that new line cinemas would be interested in funding my film as they have also funded films such as “a history of violence” and “the butterfly effect” I think my film would be a big hit in the box office because it follows the usual codes and conventions that all successful thrillers follow and the target audience is fairly wide.

Regulation Research

The BBFC (British board of film classification) is an independent organisation that gives the age classification for all films. It is their job to make sure that the material in the film is suitable for a the audience at a certain age for example a film with lots of violence, bad language and scenes of a sexual nature should not be shown to a 12 year old. So therefore it is given a rating which defines how old you must be to watch the film.
Some of the things that the BBFC looks for when giving a certification are:

• Criminal behaviour
• Illegal drugs
• Violent behaviour or incidents
• Horrific behaviour or incidents
• Human sexual activity

The BBFC gives these certificates with these objectives:

• The prevention of crime
   and disorder
• Public safety
• The prevention of public nuisance
• The protection of children
   from harm.

The certificates range from:
·        U (universal)
·        PG (parental guidance)
·        12/12A
·        15
·        18
·        R18 (restricted)

Our film would be rated a 15 because although it has strong language it doesn’t involve any of the strongest language. It also will have scenes of a sexual nature but will not dwell on them and go into detail. It will have drug taking involved in the film but won’t promote it and again won’t dwell on it. There is also violence in the film but isn’t gory in anyway.

Synopsis

Edd’s dead – synopsis

Our film is a thriller which is based on the death of Edd. It starts with Edd being chased across the moors by a mysterious character on the moors. You are left in the dark with the story line and you are unaware why he is being chased and also who is chasing him. There is a series of flashbacks of things Edd has done in his past why someone may want to kill him. These include an incident where he cheats on his girlfriend Iona and gets found out and they split up and she threatens him saying that he has messed with the wrong family this means that it may be someone from Iona’s family that is chasing him. There is also another flashback of a situation where Edd is threatening someone my driving with them stuck on the roof of his car. This unnamed character may be the killer as well. There is also another flashback of Edd spiking brooks drink at a party. These are all people that may want to kill Edd and the whole film is based around trying to work out who is the killer.

Personal comment
This is a template of the questionnaire that my team member edd has made. I handed it out so that I could learn what people believe to be the main factors of an entertaining film. This helped me as I was able to use the information I gained to produce I better film opening that will play on the factors that people most like and try to avoid things that people dislike. i learned from my results that people that fit into my target audience enjoy films that have action and a gripping storyline i hope that our film has both of these.

Audience targeting

All films are aimed at a defined audience this can be related to age, gender, interests, and socio-economic classification. For instance a Disney film will be aimed at children between the ages of 3 to 10 and will be aimed at both male and females. The interests will not be overly important as it is made to entertain children of all sorts. Also the socio-economic classification does not come into this film as most children will enjoy the film.
Our film titled edd’s dead baby suggests it will be based around a death of some sort which means the film will be of a dark nature. This means that the targeted age of the viewers will be 15 years old and older. This film will be mainly aimed at a male audience due to the nature of the film but could still be viewed and enjoyed by female’s as well as the thriller genre is such a widely enjoyed genre because the storeys usually involve some sort of love interest and can be very emotional and take some thought. You can participate in the film by trying to work out the murderer before the truth is revealed by the end of the film.
People that this film is aimed at don’t really need any sort of interests related to the film because it is aimed at a fairly large audience and will interest people that want to be entertained more than anything else. This film will apply to people who fit into C2 – E in the socio economic classification spectrum due to the nature of the film and the age group that this film is aimed. this film i would say will mostly apeal to males from the age of 15 to 40.

Codes and Conventions of genre

Personal comment
this research was very helpfull as it made me realise that a horror film would not be the best genre of film to do because it is very hard to make it scary and  also it is hard to film a horror in daylight as the cameras do not pick up much light which makes filming in the dark very hard. comedy films are also difficult to film as they can very tricky to pull of effectivly because for a comedy to work it needs to very funny and if it isnt funny no matter how well it is filmed it will not be a good film because it doesnt apeal to the right audience. this is why we have chosen to film a thriller as after some very deep thought we chose that this is the best genre to film because it is intresting and can be filmed in most places at most times of the day and it allows us to be very creative while filming.
